I love October in Moab for a few reasons.  It has finally cooled off enough that you can turn off the ac and sleep with the windows open.  The tourists are starting to leave so everything is a bit slower and the locals come out of hiding so my friends are everywhere I look.  Moab seems to blossom in the fall and it is stunningly beautiful with the changing colors next to the red rocks.

Every year in October is the gem and mineral show.  Local venders as well as people from afar come together for a 3 day event.  They have gem specimens for sale as well as just to look at, jewelry, classes and guided hikes.

I always make it a point to go at least one day of the show.  This year I was on a mission.  I have a client who specifically requested a blue opal in the heel knob of his whip.  I knew if I looked hard enough I could find the just the right one at the gem show.

It turns out that I found two that are beautiful.  One is cut like a normal opal against the grain, so it looks like little dots of color flashing out,  The other is cut with the grain.  I have never seen that before. It looks like stripes of color...  really cool.

I'm not sure which one he will pick, but I may have to make a pendant out of the other one.

Ha ha!  I just noticed that you can see the black residue from that tape I use to protect my fingers while I plait....  dang, that stuff is hard to clean off!
