Carl's Show whip

From the time I could walk, I would bring fill my pockets with "treasures"  every time I went outside.  I picked up SO many rocks over the years that there was a big pile outside door of the house I grew up in.  We called it my rock garden.  It was really where my poor mom had to toss them before washing my clothes.  Even today I have all kinds of precious stones all over my yard.

If I wasn't making whips, I could be perfictly happy being a geologist.  Moab is the most AMAZING place to live if gems are your thing.  I can walk out my door and find quartz, amethyst, citrine, selenite, calcite and fossils like petrified wood and gem grade dinosaur bone.  All of it just laying right on the surface!  If you know what to look for, you can literally go for a walk and come home with thousands of dollars of gems.  It truly is the most amazing place.  Come visit some time!

As you know, I put real gems on every whip.  I don't encourage people make requests.  It is my signature on the whip and my gift to the client.

I always have a sense of the person who orders it or something that I think will look perfect on the whip.  Some times they match and sometimes they really stand out.  I can't count the number of times that a client has called or emailed me after they have the whip and it is the gem they want to talk about because it is significant in some way to them.

Mostly I buy cabochons from the rock show or different suppliers.  Even though I have many that I have found myself that would work, its just too hard to give up the ones that I have an emotional connection to.

Carl's whip was special and it is the only whip I have made for someone else with a stone that I have found myself.  It NEEDED this fire agate on the heel.  No matter how much I looked for a different stone to put on it...  this was the one.  I actually kept this whip a little longer than I should have because I kept looking at the stone.

Carl chose to have a subtle burgundy Show whip.  The burgundy and the copper look amazing together!  I love how it brings out the warmth of the copper.  I think I love this one even better than the solid black ones.  It's alive!
